To all Counselors of the City of Toronto,

My name is Mary-Kate Rose and I work for Chestnut Park Real Estate Limited, Brokerage.

I am emailing you today to ask for your vote AGAINST the City of Toronto’s Land Transfer Tax. I remember sitting in on a debate prior to Rob Ford being voted in, during TREB’s annual meeting, in which Rob Ford promised the elimination of the Toronto LTT.

I along with more than 33,000 Realtors are still waiting for this promise to be upheld. More importantly, 2.48 million+ people in the city of Toronto alone are also waiting. This effects each and every one of my clients, new and old. While some have already bought, many who would like to purchase a home within the city of Toronto are holding off, waiting for Mr. Ford to make fair on his promises. Some are even looking to purchase elsewhere.

Toronto’s Land Transfer Tax and high business property taxes are not good for Toronto’s economy and real estate markets. City Council should make its spending decisions based on reliable revenue sources like property taxes, not unexpected surpluses from the previous year’s budget or unpredictable tax revenue, like the Land Transfer Tax, which fluctuates with the state of real estate markets.

Most importantly, with an additional land transfer tax that is based on a percentage of the Purchase price, Buyers and Sellers will be more hesitant to purchase and sell real estate in our High Priced Residential Market in the city of Toronto, taking away from our economy, and in turn weakening the economic strength of our city as a whole.

Isn’t one land transfer tax enough?

I ask, (beg even), for your vote this week…. As history shows, even one vote can make a difference.
